The eurozone recorded an international merchandise trade surplus of €12.5 billion. The September 2024 figures represent a clear increase from the +€9.8 billion recorded in September 2023.
According to the Statistical Service of the European Union (Eurostat), exports of goods from the eurozone to the rest of the world in September this year amounted to 237.8 billion euros, up 0.6% compared to September 2023, when it stopped at 236.4 billion euros. and imports on the contrary fell: €225.3 billion from €226.6 billion in 2023 (-0.6%).
Compared to August 2024, there was a clear increase in the surplus from €4.1 billion to €12.5 billion, a figure mainly driven by an increase in the surplus in machinery and vehicles (from +€9.7 billion to +€13.8 billion), while the energy-related deficit fell from €25.7 to €22.3 billion.
The data is particularly positive when looking at the period from January to September 2024 with a surplus of 140.8 billion, while for the same period in 2023, it was only 13.9 billion as a result of exports of 2136.7 billion (+0.4%) and imports fell by 5.6% to 1995.8 billion.
