The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution on artificial intelligence (AI) proposed by China, which insists on the need to strengthen close international cooperation in the course of development, regarding the evolvement of future and sophisticated forms of AI. The proposal, supported by more than 140 countries around the world, calls for “an open, fair, and non-discriminatory” business environment, as well as provides for “international support for developing countries to strengthen infrastructure dedicated to artificial intelligence.”

Recently, the debate around the development and use of artificial intelligence has become very heated. During a recent meeting of leaders from seven of the most industrialized nations (the so-called G7), Pope Francis gave a long speech on artificial intelligence, calling the new technology “an exciting and fearsome tool.”

As explained by Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, during the presentation of the resolution at the UN General Assembly, it aims to “ensure the inclusive, beneficial, and sustainable development of artificial intelligence, thus offering a contribution to the implementation of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” According to Fu, “the goal is to help all countries, especially developing countries, benefit equally from the evolvement of artificial intelligence, close the digital gap, and improve the global management of this technology.”
