Azerbaijan Launches Military Operation In Nagorno-Karabakh

The truce in Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan, was short-lived. The Baku government has announced the launch of a “military anti-terrorist operation” in Nagorno-Karabakh after several explosions on the border between Azerbaijan and the Armenian region, which is fighting against the central Azerbaijani government. At least six people were killed – four police officers and two civilians.

“As part of the fight against terrorists, the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan use high-precision weapons to strike the advanced and deep positions of the Armenian Armed Forces. Many Armenian military vehicles have been taken out of service. We confirm that only military facilities, and not the civilian population and infrastructure, were hit by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces,” said a representative of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense.

Subsequently, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense stated that the Armenian Armed Forces began to bomb Azerbaijani military positions in the Agdam region. Baku’s statements contain a phrase that is very alarming for the stability of the Caucasus: according to the Azerbaijani military, “the fire on Azerbaijani soldiers was delivered from the territories where the military contingent – the ‘blue helmets’ – of Russia is located.”

Meanwhile, the Armenian news agency Aravot writes that the explosions, artillery strikes, shots, and the noise of flying drone engines can also be heard in the city of Stepanakert, the capital of the unrecognized republic, where an “air raid alert” was announced.
