Joe Biden went on strike with workers of the automotive industry that stopped working on September 15. The US president was in Michigan on a “historic visit, the first for a president in modern times,” as a White House representative put it.
Biden supported the labor force of the Union of Auto Workers (UAW) already in the first days of the strike. But this time he went even further, physically walking alongside workers on a picket line in Wayne, Michigan, home of the General Motors parts center. Along with the president was UAW leader Shawn Fain who sent him a direct invitation to join the protests.
Biden, holding a megaphone, said, “Stick with it, because you deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits. Let’s take back what we lost: we spoke for them, now it’s their turn to step up for us.”
The strike included the Detroit’s “big three,” the heart of the US auto industry, namely GM, Ford, and Stellantis.
