BRICS Currency Not on the Agenda of the Summit in South Africa

This was supposed to be a key point of the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August, but the issue of a currency that would be an alternative to the dollar will not be on the agenda.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar explained this in recent days, also confirmed by Anil Sooklal, Ambassador General of South Africa, the country that will host the summit with the heads of state of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS).

However, this does not mean that the retreat from the dollar will not continue. “There has never been talk about the BRICS currency, it is not on the agenda. What we have said is that we will continue to develop and promote exchanges in local currencies, ”explained Anil Sooklal, according to a Reuters report.

In any case, after the start of the conflict in Ukraine and the isolation of Russia, the BRICS countries were forced to look for alternatives to the dollar. “The days of a dollar-centric world are over; this is the reality. Today we have a multipolar global trading system.”
