Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “Indonesia expressed its intention to join BRICS during the group's 15th summit held in South Africa from August 22 to 24, 2023”
Brazil, which assumed the chairmanship of the BRICS group from January 1, 2025, announced Indonesia’s formal accession to full membership of this influential international organization.
“Indonesia will formally participate in BRICS under the Brazilian presidency, which will last until December 31, 2025,” said a note released by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, according to which “Indonesia expressed its desire to join BRICS during the group’s 15th summit held in South Africa from August 22 to 24, 2023. Indonesia’s membership was unanimously endorsed by the BRICS countries.”
Indonesia’s accession marks a further expansion of the group formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011, while a year ago, in January 2024, during the Russian presidency, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, and Saudi Arabia (actual status is pending confirmation) joined the organization.
And as the Rio de Janeiro newspaper O Globo puts it, “a G20 member and one of Southeast Asia’s major economies, Indonesia is the most populous country (about 270 million inhabitants) and has the largest economy (GDP of 1,400 billion dollars) of any Southeast Asian country.”
