BRICS Membership for Serbia: “Opportunity and Alternative to EU”

Belgrade will be invited to participate in the 14th BRICS Summit in Russia in October

Aleksandar Vulin

The BRICS group of countries represents for Serbia an opportunity and a real alternative to the European Union. Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin told the Russian news agency RIA Novosti that BRICS “does not ask for anything and has a lot to offer.” According to Vulin, “unlike the EU, which demands everything from us without offering anything specific in return, this international organization (BRICS) can offer Serbia more than we ask for.”

BRICS represent a real alternative for Serbia and an opportunity for significant economic growth. “I am clearly in favor of Serbia carefully considering all opportunities offered by BRICS and evaluating the closest possible cooperation with the organization’s member countries,” Vulin said.

In this context, the Serbian authorities are already waiting in the coming days for an official invitation to the 14th BRICS Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will be held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24. During 2024, as part of Russia’s next BRICS chairmanship, “the plans are to hold more than 250 events in 11 regions of Russia, organized by representatives of federal and regional executive authorities, public organizations, and the business community.” BRICS was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined the international group in 2011. After expanding in early 2024 with five new member countries – Iran, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt – the group controls the production of about 30% of the world’s gross product.
