Cardinal Zuppi In China “For A Just Peace”

After visiting Ukraine, Russia, and the USA, Cardinal Zuppi is preparing to conclude his “peaceful diplomatic journey” with a trip to China.

After attending the Sant’Egidio meeting in Berlin in support of the spirit of Assisi, Zuppi went straight to Beijing. According to the press service of the Holy See, “On September 13-15, 2023, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, accompanied by a representative of the Secretariat of State, will travel to Beijing as an envoy of the Holy Father Francis. The visit represents a further stage of the Pope’s mission to support humanitarian initiatives and seek paths that can lead to a just peace.”

Pope Francis’s goal is to continually search for glimmers of hope that will lead to an end of the conflict in Ukraine. For this reason, he sent Zuppi first to Kiev (June 5 and 6), where he met with President Zelensky, and then to Moscow (June 28 and 29), where, however, he was unable to meet with President Putin, who was out of the capital during those days, then to Washington DC (July 17 and 19), where he talked with Joe Biden at the White House.
