Pope Francis sent a message to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people, while flying over Beijing airspace to Mongolia.
“I send good wishes to Your Excellency and the people of China, as I fly through your country’s airspace on my way to Mongolia. Assuring you of my prayers for the welfare of the nation, I call you all to the divine blessings of unity and peace.”
The response to the message of the Holy Father came through the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Wenbin, who explained how China wants to build mutual trust with the Vatican, “China is ready to continue cooperation with the Vatican to participate in constructive dialogue, deepen mutual understanding, strengthen mutual trust.”
As for the apostolic journey that began with his arrival in Ulaanbaatar on August 31, the pontiff explained, “To visit Mongolia is to visit a small people in a big country. Mongolia seems endless, but there are few inhabitants, it is a small people with a great culture. I think it will be useful for us to understand this silence, which is so long and so grand. This will help us to understand what it means, but not intellectually, to understand it with feelings. Mongolia can only be understood through the senses.”
