Address by the Advisory Council for the Evaluation of German Economic Development: the country should invest more in the military sector
Germany’s low scores are also provided by COP 29, the UN Climate Change Conference. In the global Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), presented at COP 29 by the environmental organizations Germanwatch and the NewClimate Institute, Germany has fallen to 16th place this year, i.e. two steps below last year’s results.
“The reasons should be sought in the troubled areas of transportation and construction. Germany’s progress in expanding renewable energy is positive, but it only concerns the electricity mix,” said Jan Burck of Germanwatch.
The energy transition requires billions in investment, while Germany now seems to be opting for increased military spending. Germany should invest more in the military sector, especially in new technologies. This was stated by Veronika Grimm, a member of the State’s Economic Development Review Advisory Council (SVR). “One topic that urgently needs more attention is the economic aspects of defense policy. Strengthening defense capabilities and the domestic development of important military technologies must go hand in hand. If the government acts strategically, Germany’s defense capability and at the same time its potential for innovation and growth will increase,” Grimm said.
