Scholz's response: “It's freedom of opinion”
Elon Musk continues to send signals of appreciation to the European right. This time it is the turn of Germany and the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a right-wing party founded in 2013 and gaining more and more votes in recent elections (15.9% in the European elections in June 2024 and over 33% in local elections in Thuringia in September).
The South African-born tycoon, who will play a role in Trump’s next government, wrote on the X social network he owns: “Only AfD can save Germany.” Musk’s comment appeared under a post by Naomi Seibt, a German YouTube blogger known as somewhat of an enemy of prominent environmental activist Greta Thunberg. Seibt in her post railed against Christian Democratic Party (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz, who is considered the favorite to win Germany’s election next February and who explained that he was “horrified” at the thought of Germany following the example of Elon Musk and Javier Milei.
AfD spokesperson Alice Weidle immediately thanked Musk for his statements, explaining that “AfD is really the only alternative for our country, our last option.” The recently discredited Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Social Democrats (SPD), who was approached at a press conference in Berlin on the issue, interrupted, explaining: “It’s freedom of opinion that also applies to multi-billionaires,” adding, however, that “freedom of opinion also means being able to say things that are wrong and don’t contain good policy advice.”
