The European Union’s automobile market grew by 21% in August, and the share of electric vehicle sales exceeded 20%. The first 8 months of 2023 recorded +17.9%, which is 7.1 million registered units.
This was reported by ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association) that explains why the number of registrations – 787,626 units (+21%) – is particularly significant, since it comes from a month typically characterized by low sales numbers and is the 13th consecutive month of increase. In the most important markets – Germany (+37.3%), France (+24.3%), and Italy (+11.9%) – the growth figures are double-digit. Despite the positive dynamics, the market is still far from reaching pre-Covid levels: 7.1 million cars were sold in the period January-August 2023 compared to 9 million in the same period of 2019.
It is worth noting the sales figures for electric vehicles, which reached 165,165 units (+118.1%), representing 21% of the market. All EU countries, except Malta, recorded double- or triple-digit growth in the electric vehicle sector; the record belongs to Belgium with +224.5%. Registrations of hybrid electric vehicles (+29%) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (+5.5%) also increased in August.
As for cars powered by traditional energy sources, in August there was a slight increase in gasoline cars (+2.1%, market share decreased from 38.7% to 32.7%) and a decrease in the diesel car market (-6%, now the market share is 12 .5% versus 16.1% in August 2022).
