European Nuclear Energy Forum In Bratislava

The 16th European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF) will take place in Bratislava (Slovakia) on November 6 and 7, 2023. The event is organized by the European Commission in cooperation with the Slovak Republic as the host country. On this occasion, the discussions will be held on the opportunities and risks of nuclear energy and, in particular, the role of nuclear energy in the strategic framework of the Energy Union.

The initiative is led by the Ministry of Ecological Transition of France, the European country where nuclear energy has historically been most developed. All countries that produce energy using the atom, and in any case those who support this still controversial way of producing electricity, will take part in the Forum, where Italy will also be present as an observer, monitoring the openness of the current government to the return to nuclear energy for supporting the energy transition.

“This will be an opportunity to reaffirm the central role of nuclear power in the decarbonization of the European economy and in ensuring its sovereignty,” the French ministry said in a report, which reaffirmed the importance of the agreement reached on the reform of the European electricity sector, a series of rules aimed particularly at stabilizing the prices for energy resources for individuals and companies. The agreement provides for “new measures aimed at protecting the EU energy market and countering market distortions, strengthening transparency, oversight mechanisms, and the role of the Energy Regulators Cooperation Agency,” explains the European Commission.

Among the issues to be discussed will be the evolvement of an industry coalition to develop small modular reactors (SMRs). These are small nuclear fission reactors to produce electrical or thermal energy that can be modulated to scale for specific requirements.
