Fabio Panetta will become the next Governor of the Bank of Italy. He is 63, currently a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank; he will succeed Ignazio Visco who was in office since 2011 and completes his second term at the end of October and will therefore no longer be eligible for election.
Panetta was named by the Council of Ministers at yesterday’s meeting and will thus return to Banca d’Italia, where he already worked from 2012 to 2019, first as Deputy Director and then as CEO.
Accepted by the top leadership of the Bank of Italy, as well as the Democratic Party and Italia viva, the candidate now also has to be reviewed by President Mattarella, while the process of his nomination has already begun.
