G20 Reportedly Preparing For African Union Entry

Africa will be represented in the G20. The summit of world economic powers scheduled to take place in New Delhi, India, on September 9 and 10, is actually paving the way for the “Global South,” working towards the entry of the African Union.

This was reported by Reuters, citing some AU sources, according to which the signing could be reached already during the G20. Thus, the African Union will become a full member, like the European Union, and not a “guest organization,” the status of which it will have in New Delhi.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his views on the African Union’s entry, explaining that the G20 currently represents 85% of global GDP and two-thirds of the population, but the only African member country is South Africa.

The African Union is an organization that unites 55 states of the continent for the purpose of economic and political cooperation and is aimed at international cooperation; it was founded as the Organization of African Unity in 1963 by an original group of 32 countries and officially began operating in 2002 in its current form. The headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
