Italian Front in European Parliament Against Von Der Leyen

Brothers of Italy and the League: “We're evaluating policies, not people”

The Italian “no” in the European Parliament to the reapproval of Ursula von der Leyen as president of the EU Commission has taken hold. The Brothers of Italy delegation in the European Parliament intends to vote against von der Leyen’s second mandate. “We have nothing against von der Leyen except for the political platform of the last five years. We will evaluate based on what is to be done, not on the person,” said Nicola Procaccini, co-chair of the group and member of the European Parliament for the Brothers of Italy. “However, we must take into account the fact that the next European Commission will be center-right, given that governments in Europe are mostly center-right,” emphasized Procaccini, according to whom “the emerging majority does not reflect the result of the European election vote and the political affiliation of European governments.”

Earlier, the League in the European Parliament also said it would vote against von der Leyen’s re-election. As Paolo Borchia, head of the League’s delegation to the European Chamber, said, “it will be a negative vote for von der Leyen, not so much on personality as on political project. In this parliament, with the numbers in hand, there are a certain number of center-right MPs, and I cannot understand why we are moving towards an artificial majority that leads to disrespect for the votes of the electorate,” Borchia said.
