Lavrov Will Take Part in BRICS Summit Instead of Putin

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, will attend the BRICS summit scheduled for August 22-24 in Johannesburg, South Africa. President Putin will participate using video conferencing.

BRICS (South Africa, Brazil, India, China, and Russia) will get together for a particularly important summit: countless topics are on the table, including the sensitive topic of a single currency in order to break free of the dollar. This is the 15th BRICS summit, the first in attendance since the Covid 19 pandemic.

The announcement of Lavrov’s presence in Johannesburg ended months of uncertainty in the host country: Pretoria has always refrained from taking a side against Russia regarding the war in Ukraine, but at the same time it was very shy, since an arrest warrant was issued against the head of the Kremlin by the international criminal court, where South Africa itself is a member.
