The President of the Italian Republic will be in New York from May 5 to 7; his address to the UN is entitled: “Italy, the United Nations, and multilateralism to address common challenges”
A multilateral approach to solving global problems. This will be the theme of the speech, entitled “Italy, the United Nations, and multilateralism to address common challenges,” to be delivered by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to the General Assembly.
On May 6, Mattarella will open proceedings at UN headquarters for the conference on the Status of the Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, and then he will hold a private meeting with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
As the title of the speech suggests and as Italian news agency ANSA expects, Mattarella will address the UN on the importance and strength of multilateralism as opposed to the bloc divisions that are manifesting themselves with increasing force. Especially in this context of crisis, the contrast between the “West” and the rest of the world, between the “Global North” and the “Global South” is dangerous and can only be contained by the United Nations. However, they need to be reformed and strengthened.
Mattarella will devote his visit to New York exclusively to the UN and will not meet with any US administration officials. A visit to Columbia University was scheduled instead, but was canceled due to the recent riots that engulfed it.
