New UN Initiative on Ceasefire in Gaza

China urges the USA to influence Israel to stop military action Gaza

The Arab League has submitted a new draft resolution to the UN for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and called for the start of “serious negotiations” to implement the two-state solution.

Maged Abdel Fattah, the Arab League’s representative to the UN, told reporters in New York: “We also called for the implementation of the interim rulings of the International Court of Justice on Israel’s violations against the Palestinians.”

The Arab League initiative was presented ahead of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, which will be held from September 23 to 27 in New York.

In addition, Abdel Fattah said: “There is now real momentum in the implementation of the two-state solution and the creation of a Palestinian state.”

Meanwhile, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, said the United States should influence Israel to stop military action in Gaza. “We call on the United States to show a responsible attitude, use the considerable influence it has on Israel, and take concrete measures to push it to immediately cease military operations, as required by Security Council resolutions, to give the Palestinian people, who have been suffering for a long time, a chance for life,” the Chinese diplomat stressed. “Had the USA not intervened several times, the UN Security Council could have passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire soon after the conflict began. If the United States had not constantly defended one side, numerous Council resolutions would not have been outright rejected and ignored,” Geng concluded.
