New York, or as it is known in America, the “Big Apple,” was paralyzed by an extreme weather event that caused flooding in many neighborhoods of this financial and economic center of the USA. Heavy rains that threaten to continue throughout the weekend have caused severe infrastructure and transport problems.
Traffic was practically paralyzed. Thousands of cars are stuck in giant traffic jams. Many New York subway stations were flooded and closed. Bus service was suspended, and one of LaGuardia International Airport’s terminals was closed after more than 20 centimeters of rainwater covered the runways. Dozens of flights were canceled and delayed at the region’s three largest airports (including Newark and JFK). Arriving and departing trains were delayed.
According to the National Weather Service, September of this year was “the second wettest month on record in New York City” after the one in 1882.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in the region and urged people not to leave their homes. The situation continues to be dangerous. “I have asked state agencies,” Hochul said, “to provide all the resources necessary to combat this extreme weather event.”
And while people are mobilizing all their forces in the face of the emergency, there are those in the animal world who have found a way to have fun. A sea lion at New York’s Central Park Zoo took advantage of the flooding and ran away, or rather swam away from its pool. “The female sea lion managed to swim out of the pool due to heavy flooding,” said Jim Brieny, the Wildlife Conservation Society’s executive vice president for zoos and aquariums. The sea lion happily swam around the flooded zoo, which was, of course, closed to the public, after which he returned to his pool, where two other, much more “obedient” relatives were waiting for him.
