The 39-year-old senator from Ohio came to light during the Milwaukee convention
A bandaged ear and a triumphant entrance – that’s how Donald Trump presented himself at the Republican convention in Milwaukee. In the aftermath of the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, the former president seemed moved as the audience repeated the words he said just after he was hit by a rifle shot and stood up again: “Fight, fight.”
And in response to the applause, Trump raised his hand to the sky, praising the USA in the most typical US secular ritual. Thus, the Grand Old Party (Republican Party) convention has officially endorsed Donald Trump’s candidacy for the next race for the White House. Florida’s 125 delegates put him over the 1215 threshold needed to clinch the nomination. And next to the former president, on November 5, 2024, will appear J.D. Vance.
And while many were expecting a more moderate lawmaker, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, or someone who would be a magnet for Latino votes, such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Trump’s choice instead fell on a 39-year-old senator from Ohio who is ideologically almost indistinguishable from his boss, so much so that Joe Biden called him “his clone.” However, he was initially an opponent of the tycoon: he did not join him when he was elected president in 2016, but later supported his cause when elected senator in 2022.
