The second round of the presidential election will be held in Romania on December 8, and there is certainly no shortage of surprises. On Wednesday, December 4, B1TV presented to the Romanian public the sensational results of an opinion poll, conducted on December 1 by the CURS opinion polling center, known for the accuracy of its results, in parallel with the release of the poll during the recent legislative elections.

According to the CURS poll, independent and pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu (pictured) will be able to garner about 57.8% of the votes next Sunday, while pro-European candidate Elena Lasconi will get 42.2% of Romanian voters. In particular, about 60% of voters from the mainstream Social Democratic Party said they would vote for Georgescu. Unexpectedly, about half of the voters of the ethnic Hungarian UDMR party will also vote for Georgescu, despite the support that party leader Hunor Kelemen expressed to Lasconi.

“The results of Romania’s parliamentary elections show the failure of traditional parties,” said Calin Georgescu, an independent candidate in Romania’s presidential election, in a video message where he urged politicians to “invest in people” and “recognize their failure.” Georgescu emphasized that the outcome of Sunday’s legislative elections “is actually the result of parliamentary decisions of the last 35 years.”

Amid the current political chaos in Romania, the president of the right-wing Romanian party S.O.S. Romania, MEP Diana Iovanovici Sosoaca sent a message to all sovereigntist forces in the country to “work together” to elect Calin Georgescu as head of state. “I asked sovereignist forces to unite because there is a possibility of creating a sovereignist government, even a minority, that will take on the task of leading Romania out of chaos and bankruptcy,” Sosoaca told a press conference in Bucharest.

Meanwhile, the Romanian National Liberal Party (PNL) confirmed its support for Elena Lasconi (pictured) in the second round of the December 8 presidential election. Interim party chairman Ilie Boloian said he “asked our voters to take part in Sunday’s vote and vote for Elena Lasconi, chosen as candidate by the Union for the Salvation of Romania (USD).”
