Russian Fertilizer Exports To USA Reach Record Levels

After record Russian uranium exports to the USA, it’s time for mineral fertilizers. In January-July 2023, American importers purchased fertilizers from Russia for a total amount of $944 million. The previous record was set in the same period in 2022, when the volume of American imports from Russia amounted to $900 million. This means that in the first 7 months of this year, Russian exports overseas increased by 5% compared to the same period in 2022.
Record export volumes have made Russia the second leading supplier of chemical fertilizers for US agriculture. Canada is in first place with an unattainable volume of $2.8 billion for the first seven months of this year.
At the same time, the United States is year after year reducing both imports of fertilizers and exports of its own similar products: in January-July 2023, imports of mineral fertilizers into the USA decreased by 22% compared to the first seven months of 2022 and amounted to $6 billion, while exports of American-made fertilizers during the same period fell by 36% and reached a new record low of $3.4 billion.
In 2023, Russia took second place in the world after China in the list of the largest producers of mineral fertilizers, overtaking the USA and India. Over the past 10 years, Russia has increased the production of all types of fertilizers by 40% to 55 million tons per year.
In Europe, the largest importer of Russian mineral fertilizers is Germany, which in the first half of 2023 increased imports by as much as 3.3 times to $151.3 million. Currently, Russia ranks sixth in the list of main suppliers of fertilizers to German agricultural producers.
