Rwanda: Plebiscite for Kagame

66-Year-old Kagame has led the country since 2000

Paul Kagame, as expected, won the presidential election held in Rwanda on July 15, 2024 with over 99% of the vote. A true plebiscite for a head of state who has been in office since 2000 and was re-elected in 2003, 2010, and in 2017. In this election, this percentage will be even higher than the 98.79% received in 2017, 93.08% in 2010, and 95.05% in 2003.

The results, according to a statement by the head of the electoral commission and a report by the Italian news agency ANSA, are as follows: “The Rwanda Patriotic Front candidate (i.e. Paul Kagame) received 99.15% of the votes in the presidential election, Democratic Green Rwanda candidate Frank Habineza got 0.53%, and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana gathered 0.32%.”

In fact, the 66-year-old politician, who hails from the Tambwe region (southern province), has been in power since 1994, when he led the movement that toppled the Hutu government responsible for the Rwandan genocide, which the UN estimates killed 800,000 people.
