According to Spain's prime minister, “we don't need another war”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the European Union should reconsider tariffs imposed on Chinese electric cars. Sanchez spoke about this during his visit to China, where he met with Xi Jinping.

Currently, the EU has established duties of up to 36.3% on imports of electric cars manufactured in China. The tax, which is expected to be finalized in autumn. But, according to the Spanish leader, “we must all reconsider our decision, not only the member states, but also the Commission.” Sanchez explained that there is no need for “another war.” “I think we have to build bridges between the EU and China, and Spain will try to be constructive and try to find a compromise.”

For his part, Xi Jinping stressed during his meeting with Sanchez on September 9 that 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Spain global strategic partnership. “Both sides should adhere to the original intention to establish diplomatic relations based on mutual respect and equal treatment, as well as build long-term and stable China-Spain relations with strategic determination and take bilateral relations to a higher level,” Xi Jinping said.
