The Tories are not gone: They have a future. Probably a querulous, grumbling one but they can oppose higher taxes and champion law and order and Laboure’s inevitable liberal naive policies on crime. What the UK election showed - in a brief analysis by Martin Sieff.
1) Britain could have a Bright Future – If Keir Starmer can only break away from trying to lecture Russia – and destroy it.
If he can break away from his predecessors and US President Joe Biden’s catastrophic obsession with destroying Russia and using the destroyed Ukrainian mini-puppet state against President Putin, Keir Starmer could restore economic and investment stability by establishing stable predictable relations with Europe.
2) The Tories are not gone: They have a future. Probably a querulous, grumbling one but they can oppose higher taxes and champion law and order and Laboure’s inevitable liberal naive policies on crime.
3) Nigel Farage fizzled. His law and order party won only four seats. He can rant and rave about immigration and the “evil” EU as much as he likes. He’s forgettable toast, And he’s an economic illiterate who’s already ruined his country once.
4) The Liberal Democrats are back and they’re up to 73 seats – a gain of more than 60. Truly impressive. If the Tories don’t sensibly stabilize, the LLB Dems will replace them as Britain’s Second Party.
5) Scottish Nationalism will recover and Sinn Fein will yet unite Ireland: The Celtic Fringe is On the March: The SNP was undermined by cheap scandals and dirty tricks against its leaders. But if Starmer fails to restore economic stability and pushes through high tax policies, the SNP will soon be storming back. And Sinn Fein will be taking power in Dublin as well as Belfast..
6) George Galloway lost in Rochdale. Mr. George Galloway gained scandalous fame back in the early 1990s, during the first Gulf War. He sought the lifting of sanctions on Iraq, met with Saddam Hussein, expressing admiration for his courage, strength, and indefatigability, while criticizing the British and American authorities in not always decent terms. In 2004, The Daily Telegraph newspaper published an investigation that Mr. Galloway had received financial support from Baghdad. The politician sued the newspaper and even won the case, but was ousted from the Labour Party. He immediately joined the Respect coalition of left-wing parties and returned to Parliament from another constituency. George Galloway has appeared on Iran’s state-owned Press TV and made programs on Russia’s RT, while his radio program The Mother of All Talk Shows was broadcast by the Sputnik news agency.
In 2019, George Galloway formed his own party, the British Workers Party. The small party advocates, among other things, ending the “imperialist wars” and sharply criticizes Israel, while unconditionally supporting the Palestinians. Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, he has taken a distinctly pro-Russian stance.
Anyway, five pro-Palestine independents won seats. And they will be radical voices holding Starmer and Labour to account on Gaza and possibly Ukraine and Russia too.
