Slovakia: Attack on Robert Fico, “His life is in danger”
Slovakia's prime minister was shot several times at the end of a political rally in Handlova, Slovakia
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is fighting for his life after being shot several times in the town of Handlova. Given the seriousness of the situation, Fico was transported to Banska Bystrica, at the foot of the Tatras, rather than to the capital Bratislava, in order to get medical care as fast as possible.
Fico was shot in front of the cultural center where the Slovak government was meeting. The attacker was immediately detained.
The politician’s Facebook page posted the first news about his health condition: “R. Fico became the victim of an assault. He has been shot several times, and his life is currently in danger. At the moment, he is being taken by helicopter to Banska Bystrica, as it would take too long to get to Bratislava, given the need for immediate medical intervention. The next few hours will be crucial.”
“I am shocked by the news of the attack on Slovak Prime Minister Fico after the Slovak cabinet meeting in Handlova. Nothing can ever justify violence or such attacks. My thoughts are with the prime minister and his family,” Charles Michel, president of the European Council, wrote in X.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni speaks of a “cowardly attack.” Also, on behalf of the Italian Government, I wish to express the strongest condemnation of any form of violence and attacks on the basic principles of democracy and freedoms.”
Olaf Scholz, Germany’s chancellor, said he was “shocked: violence should have no place in European politics. During these hours, my thoughts are with Robert Fico, his family, and the citizens of Slovakia.” Prime Minister of England, Rishi Sunak, was also “shocked by the terrible news,” expressing closeness to the politician’s family.
Russian President Vladimir Putin explained that he “learned with indignation about the attempt on the life of Robert Fico, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic. This atrocious crime cannot be justified. I know Robert Fico as a courageous and strong-minded man. I truly hope these personal qualities will help him overcome this harsh situation. Please convey to him the words of my sincerest support and my wishes for a speedy and full recovery.”
