South Korea: Chief of Staff Arrested

He allegedly played a key role in the attempted rebellion on December 3, when President Yuon imposed martial law

Republic of Korea Army Chief of Staff General Park An-su, who served as commander-in-chief during President Yoon Suk-yeol’s brief imposition of martial law, has been arrested. This was reported by Korea’s Yonhap news agency, explaining that the charge is abuse of power and that he played a key role in the attempted mutiny.

Following the actions of President Yoon Suk-yeol, the 63-year-old president and member of the (conservative) People’s Power Party, who declared martial law on December 3, 2024, which ended the next day with a parliamentary vote, former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command Lt. Gen. Yeo In-hyung, head of the Army Special Warfare Command Lt. Gen. Kwak Jong-keun, and head of the General Defense Command Lt. Gen. Lee Jin-woo were arrested.

Meanwhile, a trial is about to begin at the Constitutional Court to decide whether Yoon should be reinstated or removed from office after the National Assembly voted in favor of impeachment. Yoon is currently suspended from his duties.
