Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hopes the G20 will support comprehensive economic reform
China asked the group of 20 of the world’s most industrialized countries to “assume their responsibilities, not practice selective multilateralism, and support the reform of the United Nations and global economic governance.” During a meeting on Wednesday, September 25 (Thursday, September 26 in Europe) with the G20 heads of diplomacy in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (pictured) called for “efforts to promote investment, oppose protectionism in all its forms, bridge the digital divide between the world’s North and South, and increase the representation of developing countries among the most important international organizations, including the UN.”
In his speech, Wang paid great attention to the issue of international security, calling for an “immediate ‘cooling’ of the situation in Ukraine,” which is a prerequisite for the resumption of peace talks.
As for the fighting in Gaza and the escalating armed conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, the Chinese foreign minister said that in the current heated situation, “the priority is to immediately achieve a complete and sustainable ceasefire, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, implement the two-state solution, and recognize Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.”
