Trump, Canada, 51st State

Donald Trump recently defined Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “governor,” as someone who runs a federal state rather than a country is called. Now, in a post on Truth social network, the President-elect of the United States has been even more outspoken: “No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!”

The tycoon made the same statement at a recent meeting at Mar-a-Lago with Trudeau, and it was taken as a joke. But repeating the joke twice can get tiresome, especially at a time when relations with northern neighbors are strained over the threat of tariffs and Justin Trudeau, who is struggling with a complex domestic political crisis.

Trump also aggravated the situation by explaining that most Canadians would like to come under the US flag. But actually, a poll by the Leger Institute, reported by Brazilian newspaper O Globo, shows that only 13% of Canadians want it.

Trump also commented on the recent resignation of Canadian Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who disagreed with Trudeau over the strategy to be used in dealing with the tycoon.

“Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!” Trump commented.
