One of the cooling towers is severely damaged. IAEA: fortunately, nuclear safety will not be affected
A fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is located in the territory controlled by the Russian Federation.
According to NPP management, “the fire originated in one of the cooling towers, which was not functioning.” Representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN agency that has a permanent presence at the plant, said there was “no impact on nuclear safety.”
Russia accused Kiev’s army of “serious damage to the structure after two direct drone attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.” The cooling tower of the former Soviet nuclear power plant, built by the USSR in 1981-1987, “burned from the inside after the Ukrainian attack, and the timing of repairs will become clear after damage assessment,” said the head of the NPP’s communications service, Evgeniya Yashina.
