A building in Gaza City, the main population center of the Gaza Strip and home to the headquarters of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), was “bombed,” leaving “a significant number of dead and wounded.” This was stated by UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. “The office in Gaza was bombed, we are receiving information about the dead and wounded among those who sought refuge in our complex. This is wrong in every way. Civilians, civilian infrastructure, and the integrity of United Nations facilities must be protected at all times,” Steiner said.
Alarm signals also came from the Secretary General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, according to whom “all contact has been lost” with Al-Shifa Hospital, also located in Gaza City, around which there is fierce fighting between the Islamist movement Hamas and the Israeli army. “WHO is very concerned about the safety of health workers, hundreds of sick and injured patients, and newborns requiring respiratory care, as well as evacuees inside the hospital,” Tedros wrote on X social network (formerly Twitter).
Following calls from the UN, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that on Sunday they will help evacuate newborns in a completely surrounded medical facility. According to the Israeli non-governmental organization Physicians for Human Rights of Israel, Al-Shifa Hospital “has about 40 newborns whose lives are in danger due to lack of electricity caused by fuel shortage.”
Finally, on Saturday evening, the Israeli Air Force attacked some “terrorist targets” in Syria after a missile strike launched from Syrian territory and directed towards the Golan Heights.
