UN: US And Russia Hope For Fundamental Reform

US President Joe Biden will propose fundamental reform of the UN Security Council during his speech on Tuesday, September 19 at the UN General Assembly. As White House national security spokesman John Kirby told The Daily Telegraph, “We have made it clear that we believe it is time to look at the architecture of the Security Council. We believe it should be more inclusive and global.”

Russia said it agreed that “UN reform is on the agenda.” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said discussions on UN Security Council reform, especially allowing new countries to join, “must begin.” The goal of the entire process is to make the UN’s highest body “more inclusive.”

“The UN Security Council,” Peskov told the media in Moscow, “needs transformation in order to maximize the efficiency of this extremely important international body. This obviously requires consensus among all participants and greater inclusivity. Russia has spoken about this more than once.”

The opening of the 78th UN General Assembly (September 19-20) and the UN Climate Summit was preceded by a mass demonstration in New York. Tens of thousands of environmentalists took to the streets in Manhattan to demand President Biden end new projects on extracting fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and gas.
