On October 27, Uruguay will vote to renew parliament and elect a new president. A possible second round will be held on November 24. Current President Luis Lacalle Pou, elected in 2019, cannot run because the country’s constitution prevents an immediate runoff. The candidate of the center-right National Party is Alvaro Delgado.
The latter, according to the latest polls published by Cifra, should hold a steady 23% preference and would reach 43% in the second round, with the support of other groups currently in the government coalition. The candidate of the broad center-left coalition Yamandu Orsi, who has the support of José “Pepe” Mujica (president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015), should garner 44% of the vote already in the first round. In any case, a second round seems the most likely option.
2 million 700 thousand people are eligible to vote. More than 7000 precincts will be distributed across 19 districts.
