The latest poll shows Kamala Harris ahead by one point
Three months before the vote and on a day when the name of the vice-presidential candidate who will form the Democratic ticket along with Kamala Harris is due to be revealed, the 2024 US presidential campaign appears to be starting from scratch.
According to a new CBS News poll, Harris is 1 point ahead of Donald Trump nationally. A fact that in an absolute sense means little given the US electoral system, but signals that Republicans, who have accumulated a significant advantage over Biden in potential preferences, need to do it all over again.
In fact, Harris would get 50% preference, and Trump would get 49%, while both candidates would be tied in swing states: 50/50. Specifically, in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, there will be a tie, while Wisconsin, Georgia, and North Carolina favor Trump, and Nevada favors Harris.
“With the support of Democrats, young and black voters who are more engaged and who vote, as well as women who think she better serves their interests, Vice President Kamala Harris has rebooted the 2024 presidential race,” CBS explains.
The next few weeks could prove crucial; in the meantime, Harris, having obtained the necessary delegates to formalize her candidacy, is about to announce the selection of her vice. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Pennsylvania Governor and Arizona Senator Josh Shapiro, and former astronaut Mark Kelly are contenders. In the past few hours, Harris has also held talks with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.
