The next US president also promised trade restrictions with Mexico and Canada
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is currently in the USA where he will meet with Donald Trump at his “headquarters” in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
The Canadian leader’s goal is to hold talks with the next US president, who has said his tariff “war” will not spare two countries that have very close trade ties with Washington, namely Mexico and Canada.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was quick to say everything, explaining that there will be no “tariff war” with the USA and that the free trade agreement will be renegotiated in 2026 as planned, but on immigration, she flatly answered: “We reaffirm that Mexico’s position is not to close the borders, but to build a bridge between governments and peoples.” And then Trudeau, according to a New York Times report, wasted no time in seeking an immediate meeting with the tycoon.
Trump has threatened to impose 25-percent duties on goods from Canada and Mexico if they don’t end the drug trade between the countries. Trudeau took a pragmatic approach, explaining that the president-elect should understand that any tariffs would seriously harm both countries, given that one is the other’s best trading partner.
