USA: Capitol Attack Four Years Ago

On January 6, 2021, a group of Trump supporters stormed the seat of the U.S. government

Exactly 4 years ago, on January 6, 2021, a group of protesters stormed the Capitol in Washington, DC, where the confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 presidential election was underway.

The protesters were Donald Trump supporters who claimed the election was rigged, and Biden went so far as to talk about “domestic terrorism,” and today, days before the handover of power to Donald Trump, who defeated Kamala Harris in the November 2024 presidential election, he revisits what happened, explaining that these facts “should not be forgotten or rewritten.”

“I don’t think we should act as if nothing happened, what he did (Trump accused of inciting protesters – ed.) was a real threat to democracy, and I hope the US has overcome it.”

The ensuing commission of inquiry accused Trump of inciting protesters by facilitating a plot to overturn the results of the presidential election and failing to act to prevent his supporters from attacking the Capitol.

However, in December 2024, Special Prosecutor Jack Smith requested the dismissal of two federal trials against the president-elect (concerning Capitol Hill and classified documents stored at his private residence at Mar-a-Lago). It would no longer be possible to prosecute a sitting president, and there wouldn’t be enough time to close the hearings before January 20, the date Trump takes office.
