USA: Robert Kennedy May Drop Out of Election Race and Side with Trump

The independent candidate is struggling to emerge from the shadows of a colossal political battle between Republicans and Democrats

The rise of Kamala Harris, whose candidacy for the US presidency is backed by the full might of the US administration’s political machine, is worrisome. In such an environment, therefore, political ambitions must be put aside for the good of the country: campaign advisers for independent presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. are considering dropping out of the race and suggesting that he support the campaign headquarters of former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump.

As Kennedy vice-presidential candidate Nicole Shanahan stated, “one option would be to stay in the race by forming a new party, but in that case we would take votes away from Trump and risk a Harris-Waltz tandem in the White House.” After Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race for the White House, it was the right thing for Kennedy to “step out of the campaign and join forces with Trump in explaining to our voters the reasons for that decision,” Shanahan emphasized.

Recently, Kennedy Jr.’s candidacy has also faced some legal challenges. New York state authorities have removed the independent candidate from the state’s campaign trail, accusing him of “falsely declaring his residency.” During the weeklong trial, Kennedy Jr. who lives in California, said he “lived in New York for decades and always intended to return there.”

Faced with an unprecedented battle between Republicans and Democrats, Kennedy’s campaign, whose approval rating was holding at “double digits” in early 2024, is now in a quandary. It is becoming increasingly difficult for the independent candidate to find a place to promote his program to voters and emerge from the shadows amidst the competition of big names in the US political arena.
