USA: Trump Anticipates New Duties on Goods from Canada, Mexico

Additional, better to say “prohibitive,” tariffs, including for China

A new tightening of Washington’s measures in trade relations between the United States and its closest allies, Canada and Mexico, is expected. US President-elect Donald Trump has said he is “determined to impose a 25% tariff on all goods coming into the United States from Canada and Mexico.”

In a message that Trump posted on his Truth social media platform, the 47th US president, without explaining the connection between customs duties and illegal immigration, however, wrote that “thousands of immigrants are coming from both countries, bringing crime and drugs to levels never before seen.”

The president-elect added that the tariff will remain in place “until the invasion of drugs and illegal migrants is over,” emphasizing that the Canadian and Mexican authorities have “all the tools to solve the problem.”

In addition, Trump blamed China for the proliferation of drugs and especially fentanyl in the United States, adding that immediately after taking office in the White House on January 20, “he will impose an additional 10% tariff on products exported from China to the USA.” The new strike will intensify already exorbitant tariffs that were approved by outgoing President Joe Biden on many Chinese goods, including electric cars.
