Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit that recently took place in Johannesburg.
This was reported by the Chinese Xinhua News Agency that noted “a cordial and in-depth exchange of views on current China-Indian relations and other issues of mutual interest.” This is a fact of great importance, considering that direct meetings between the two world’s most populous countries are very rare.
Under these conditions, Xi Jinping emphasized that “the improvement of Chiona-Indian relations serves the common interests of the two countries and two peoples, promoting peace, stability, and the development of the world and the region. Both sides should take into account the common interests of their bilateral relations and appropriately resolve the border issue in order to jointly protect peace and tranquility in the border region.”
According to CNN reports citing Indian diplomat Vinay Kwatra, Modi emphasized that maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas, as well as observing and respecting the LAC (India-China De facto Dividing Line), are essential for normalizing the relations between the two countries.
