He succeeded Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran on July 31 in a targeted attack
Yahya Sinwar is the new political leader of Hamas, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated on July 31 in Tehran, Iran.
Sinwar is known as the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that began Israel’s endless retaliation that destroyed and starved the Gaza Strip.
The announcement was made by Hamas itself after rumors and denials circulated for days about who would become the Palestinian movement’s new leader. “This choice,” explains the faction spokesman, “is a strong signal to the occupiers that Hamas continues on the path of resistance.
A real nightmare of the Israelis, Sinwar, not seen in public since October 7 and reportedly hiding in the tunnel network under Gaza, has been attributed by analysts with the phrase: “We will tear down the border with Israel and tear the hearts out of their bodies.”
Israel’s comment came via Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz’s X social media: “The appointment of ultra-terrorist Yahya Sinwar as the new leader of Hamas, replacing Ismail Haniyeh, is another good reason to remove him quickly and wipe this vile organization off the face of the earth.”
