USA, Biden Will Not Attend UNFCCC 28 in Dubai

US President Joe Biden will not participate in UNFCCC 28. The New York Times reported this with reference to White House representatives.

An important UN climate summit will take place on Thursday, November 30, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A key event to summarize the measures that need to be taken to curb global warming, even if they are often inconclusive. Leaders from 200 countries are expected to be in Dubai, and the US will be represented by John Kerry, Biden’s special envoy on climate change.

No reason was given for the White House leader’s likely absence, but the reconstruction shows Biden completely consumed and “exhausted,” as quoted by the New York Times, “by the war in Israel and peace talks.” Biden attended the last two UNFCCC 28 summits, held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt in 2022 and Glasgow, Great Britain in 2021. Biden’s vice Kamala Harris will also likely be absent, her staff confirmed.

While it is difficult for an international leader to personally attend all these types of meetings, Biden’s absence is strange given that he has always addressed the issue of global warming, which he has defined as “the newest threat to humanity.” Biden himself has brought the United States back to the table to discuss global climate agreements after Donald Trump completely avoided the topic during his presidency.
